The former President via his twitter handle sympathized with them calling for global unity to combat the menace of terror.
Horror came down on France when a gun man driving a lorry started shooting into the crowd of people celebrating the Bastille Day (French Independence day) national holiday, southern French city of Nice.
My heart goes out to the people of France over the horrific terror attack #Nice Again I call for global unity to combat the menace of terror— Goodluck E. Jonathan (@GEJonathan) July 15, 2016
May the souls of the victims rest in peace and may God grant the nation of #France strength as they mourn. My family and I mourn with them— Goodluck E. Jonathan (@GEJonathan) July 15, 2016
According to an eye witness, the man got out of the truck and started shooting at people, got back into the truck and plowed into the crowd killing several other people. The lorry rammed into the crowd on the Promenade des Anglais seaside walk in the centre of town.
Although the driver was shot dead, the discovery of guns and grenades inside the lorry has prompted President Francois Hollande to describe the attack as that of “terrorist nature”.
France had been on high alert following last November’s attacks in Paris in which 130 people died and hundreds were wounded.
